We do not know exactly how the idea came to mind; Toyota engineers may have collaborated with Subaru on certain components, but it is clear that their goal was never to create just another ordinary coupé when designing a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Perhaps this is what truly sets Japanese manufacturers apart: their commitment to heritage and automotive culture. Even if they never openly admit it, it seems quite evident that naming this car was a deliberate nod to the legendary AE86 that emerged years ago.
